I actually owe a ton of thanks to Tommy aka therewasme for inspiring the Classic Batcave props. He was in the midst of constructing his own Batcave set-up, aimed at a DC Direct 6″ scale. He wanted to use my Giant Penny and Joker Card Animated Series props, but asked if there was any chance I could rework them into a scale appropriate for DC Direct figures. And, while I was at it, could I make the Penny more historically accurate. I never realized that the penny had 1947 as the specific date printed on the coin.

Anyway, the two pieces were created digitally and printed onto a nice cardstock. Using 3M’s Spray Mount, I mounted the pieces onto black core FoamCore and trimmed the pieces using an X-Acto blade. I then adhered the nameplates and props to some spare bases from the N2 Toys Series 2 Matrix figures, which just happened to be a perfect fit.

Sure, it’s not like you can really PLAY with either of these, but they certainly make the figures stand out nicely on the display shelf.

Thinking back to the Batman comics I read growing up, it always seemed like Batman would be bandaged like crazy after he took off the costume. Neal Adams always drew a Batman who was not only at the top of his game, but showed the signs of the wear and tear a hero would really endure. With that in mind, I wanted to expand my Batman collection by featuring a battle-damaged Batman, as he would appear when working out in the Batcave.

I began by taking a Zipline Batman figure and removed the original belt, head, gloves and cape. I replaced the forearms with those from a Buff Bagwell wrestling figure. The head comes from an Astro City Samaritan figure while the cape is reworked from an old movie Batman figure. I used clear vinyl to create the bandages and Magic Sculpt to sculpt the neck and hair.

All in all, I’m extremely happy with how this custom turned out. And, despite what you may have read on that other site, the Batcave Batman made its appearance first on ICP. Remember to give credit when credit’s due if you’re going to steal a recipe, y’all!

The Batcave - Custom Playset by Matt 'Iron-Cow' Cauley

Batman just wouldn’t be Batman without his Batcave to hide out in. This project came about when I found myself with an extra shelf that was too small to contain any clothes, but would actually work as a great display area for my action figures.

The Batcave playset measures 4 feet wide by 12 inches deep. The base is made out of wood and can separate into smaller components if necessary. This feature came in very handy when I moved to a new home and found myself with a slightly smaller display area. The background image was a screengrab from “Batman: Sub-Zero” which I then brought into Photoshop to manipulate. The final print is roughly 16 inches tall and runs the length of the playset. Finally, the addition of a T-Rex I found at Toys R’ Us completes the Batcave.

Though most of the time I have closer to 100 figures inhabiting the Batcave, it still makes for a fun display piece.

Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message.
