Glassman's Customs - Supermans Pal pg13

*** UPDATE 03 OCT 09 pg13 ***

Ok so i'm slow... I just found out about these forums. When i visit Iron Cow's Site, i jump straight for the customs and didnt notice the forums.

Some of you may know me already, For those not familiar with my work, I mainly make Star Wars and Justice League Unlimited Customs

This First custom is a result of the Group project #7 over at scum. The group projects are sort of learning excercizes where we share different techniques to end up with the same figure.

Image

These parts were cast from Aya Vida with hands from Admiral Ackbar and then modified with wax and re-casted.

I cast the final parts in redish brown plastic to match ackbar.
Image

I drybrushed the browns on the figure leaving some of the red showing thru. I drybrushed the front of the clothing as to give it a sort of sheer look.(still trying to perfect that)

Image

Here are my season 2 cartoon clones.(Two of them are now available by Hasbro  )

Image

I did some work on the cardbacks, i still need to cut them and spraymount them.

Image Image Image

Image

I put a peg on the pack of cody that the backpack fits onto.

Image

Image

Image

Vintage Chebacca in Snoova Disguise.

Image

I layed off the detail on this one. I was sculpting and adding all these little details, and remebered, that the vintage line didnt have alot of detail.
It's got some rough spots that i would have taken more time to smooth out if i didnt wait till the last week to do this custom.
I also was gonna paint him one shade of brown like vintage chewie, but i remeberd He colored his fur for the disguise, so i gave him a couple washes of darker browns and black.
His Blaster is a cast and the Vibro Axe is the Scope and Butt of some random rifle i found in my Fodder box.
As for not being able to find a good reference pic, i did the next best thing... I made one.

Here is Snoova Carded.

Image

I googled Machine and engine parts and grabbed a bunch of pictures and made it look like his armor and gadgets.
I even photoshoped a vintage shadows of the empire line for the back of the card.
Since SOTE took place between Ep 5 & 6, that where i placed the figs. Thats why i'm using the 41 back ESB card.

Super Articulated Bacara and Galactic marines.

Image

Bacara : Super Articulated Clone Body, Cast Tank gunner head and cast hollow bacara helmet. The rest of his gear came from bacara.

Galactic Marines: torso and arms #33 clone commander, Heads cast Tank gunner and Speeder Bike Clone, the shoulder pauldrons were casts as well. I took two #33's and spliced them so there was no big shoulder pad, just small on each side. I then made a mold of that.
The Skirts are cast form bacara's
The legs are Clone pilot on one and Snow trooper on the other. Couldnt decide which one i wanted to go with, so i did both.
The helmets are hollow casts of snow trooper with most of the helmet detail sanded off.

Here is Cartoon Padme. She was sculpted in wax and cast in white plastic.

Image
Image

Image

The cape is made from Bake and bend sculpey.

It sculpey that stays flexible after you bake it. It sands and holds paint like regular sculpey.

The cape is made in two pieces. the cape and the hood. The ties are made with little balls of sculpey rolled onto some floss.

Image

Image

I also Love the Justice league Unlimited line, so Here are a bunch of figs i've done.

The Justice Lords
Image

Vixen is cast completely in plastic. I did a re-tool of a wonderwoman head in wax. I cast the torso and legs of WW also. The Arms are Hawkgirls and the left hand is cast from Catwoman from the Batman & Robin animated line.

I chose to cast the parts to save on fodder since i want to do dozens of figures so this is the most economical way.

She has all 5 point of articulation like the JLU women have.

Image

Captain Marvel. I tried to make his flap and cape look like clothes with wrinkles...didnt come out as i had hoped, but it will do.

Image
Image

Here's Lois.
Image

She was made by putting together the legs of WW(for the heels) and the torso of Hawkgirl.(less busty) I then used sculpy to make the vest, and used strips of styreene to make the skirt. I also used sculpy to add sleeves to Hawkgirl's arms.
The head is a re-tooled wonder woman sculpt.
I then made a molds of the pieces. Then cast her in plastic.

As mentioned, this process allows me to re-use the same few parts for countless customs.

Here is the pic before painting.

Image

"Birdnose" as grundy calls her.
I've wanted to do this one for a while, Not to mention she's headlinging alot of my favorite JLU episodes.

I chose do do the white outfit version since i havent see that one done yet.

Image

Here is the sculpt and the plastic cast. I just sculpted the head onto hawlkgirls hair piece. I was intedning on making this another re-tool of wonderwoman, but a few errors caused me to have to sculpt everything. The body is not cast ths time, I just used the hawkgirl body that i had been making molds from.

Image

Stargirl... I will do S.T.R.I.P.E sometime soon.
The torso, legs and arms are casts of Hawkgirl.
The Cuffs of the gloves and Boots are milliput. The Boots bottom are cast from Supergirl(STAS).

The head was a wax sculpt, sculpted onto the hair piece of Hawkgirl and then molded and cast.

Image

Captain atom
Image

The Question. He was made from a cast lex luthor, the head was sculpted (easiest face I ever did), and the hat and trench are made from sculpy-flex.

Image

Image

Here is Huntress.

She is made from plastic casts of WW legs and torso, Cast hawkgirl arms and the cape is Sculpey flex.

The head was sculpted in wax onto WW hair and cast in plastic like shayera and stargirl.

Image

the crossbow was made from a clonetrooper gun and pieces of a shoulder strap from a stormtroopers rifle.

Superhero Showdown Batman
He was made from SHS Punisher. The cowel is milliput and the Cape is a piece of pantyhose.
Image
Image

Here are my entries for custom-con. I had grander schemes of 3 groups.
These are the only ones i got finished. I started the Friday before the deadline, so thats why i didnt get more finished.

Classic X-men. Recipies are on the Last Day of this Fall's Custom Con.

Image

Fire

Fire from the I am Legion episode of JLU. Once again, Head sculpt onto wonder woman hair piece, and cast hawkgirl for the body.
Image
Image

And last but not least...

Here is Zatanna.

Image

She is made from casting ( get it cast...spell...) Wonderwoman legs and torso, hawkgirl arms, retooled WW head sculpted onto the hairpiece of WW, and Cast Mad Hatter hat.

Here is the figure before painting.

Image

Here is what i made the torso from.
Image

Milliput has been added to a WW torso. Then molded and cast. Here you can see the face sculpt onto the WW hair piece. This pic was taken after De-mold so thats why the cracks in the wax. When i'm done i just remove the wax and re-use the hair for the next fig. This same hair piece was used for Fire and Huntress.

Hawkman , Carter Hall

Image

Image

Here he is with shayera, as seen in the "Shadow of the Hawk" episode.

Image

He is completely cast in plastic. Even the wings. His head was sculpted in wax as usual. The straps are cut strips of styreene.

Image

Here is the sculpt. As you can see i cheated with the wings on the mask. They are cut from cardboard. and glued to the wax sxulpt before molding. It worked out great.

Image

Gorilla Grodd.

Image

He was sculpted over a cast of Ultrahumanite. I then sculpted the head and made a plastic cast.

Since I knew i would need alot of sculpting medium, I used what i had most of, Self-hardening sculpting clay.
I was also reminded why i had so much, I hate the stuff. I used it a couple times years ago and moved on to sculpey.

The stuff is easy to work with and dries quickly, but it shrinks a bit and cracks...ugh!

I used milliput to cover where the clay cracked off.

Image

The head was sculpted in wax.

Since most Star wars customizers these days can't seem to shake the clone bug, i figured, why fight it.

I wanted to do somthing a bit different though. I had fun making vintage snoova, so i felt like doing some more.

What if, George Lucas didint wait 20 years to make the prequels...Would the clone action figures look like this??

Vintage Clone trooper Evolution

Image

The torso was sculpted in wax for the 2 clones.

I took a cast of vintage stromie's arms and legs, and sculpted on top of them for the clone's armor.

Then i added the head of the Bootleg Clone ( the one that had the marching clone) and made a cast of that.
Same for the Ep III clone, except i used the head of the Galactic heroes. His skirt is a piece of plastic from a 3-ring binder.
The sand trooper, i just sculpted on the pauldron and the back pack. Then made a mold an cast.
The great Bantha 5 made one of these years ago, and i almost contacted him to see if i could get one for this projrct, but i stopped being lazy and made my own.

Here are more shots.

Image

Here they are compared to the kenner product.

And the back...

Here is my Daffy Duck as Han Solo

WOW!

Seriously, man... I just don't konw where to begin! Right off the bat, that Daffy Duck-as-Han Solo is the coolest figure I've seen in ages!

I love that you also go all out on the packaging, too. Looks completely convincing, and totally professional.

The vintage Star Wars pieces... the Animated Clone Wars and JLU stuff... so many different styles, and yet SO well done. Those Classic X-Men are insanely nice! I would buy those in a heartbeat!

I need to go back through and really savor these pieces. Thank you for such an amazing post!

nakedDerby, Thanks alot. I love seeing others WIP pics. So i try to include them when i can.

Iron-Cow, Thanks for all the kind words. As a long time fan of your work, it means alot.

hemble Thanks again. For the longest time i did nothing but star wars, but I love Justice League and JLU, so i switch gears back and forth between the two genres. On my site there is a non star wars button...thats where my other customs are hidden.

Great to see you here, Glassman!!

Seeing these again were just as great the second time around...and there were a few surprises I hadn’t seen before. The craftsmanship on the Clone Wars Padme is just awesome. I so envy your mastery of the animated style. I think the custom I enjoyed the most, though, was the Vintage Chewie as Snoova! BRILLIANT!

Any chance you’ve got a Vintage Qui Gon or Darth Maul planned?

Sadly, I lost interest in the SW property about 10 minutes into Episode III, so when I first looked at these customs I was unfamiliar with the characters. I had no frame of reference to judge them by.

I was all set to comment on the precision paint app when I realized something.

...You sculpted the heads.

 ...You sculpted the friggin’ heads.

 Good God, man. I have no idea how you do it. It was impressive enough to watch you master the Animated style, and carve flawless details onto 4" figures...but to get such a symmetrical, realistic, naturalistic feel to facial features that are that tiny...well, you already started out as one of my new favorites, and now you’ve jumped up about 5 notches on my scale.

Stunning.

Keep ‘em comin’!
:)
